Should I use an Electric Toothbrush?

Electric toothbrushes, which use an oscilating or rotary motion to clean the teeth, are beneficial because they can cover a larger area of the mouth faster than a manual toothbrush. They're especially well-suited for those with braces, who need extra motivation to brush, and those who have difficulty operating a manual toothbrush due to age, disability, or other factors.

If you use an electric toothbrush, avoid pressing down too hard; instead, use light force and slow movements, letting the brush do the work for you. Those using and electric toothbrush for the first time may find it tickles or feels unusual, but they will adapt and get used to it. Children age 10 and younger should be supervised while using an electric toothbrush.

What to do in a dental emergency.....

Our lives today are filled with numerous activities that can cause a dental emergency. Anything from eating popcorn or other seemlingly harmless activities can suddenly turn into a painful injury.

What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency occurs when a tooth breaks, cracks, becomes loose, or is knocked out completely. A crown coming off may also cause injury to the mouth tissue and become painful. You can help prevent a dental emergency by wearing a mouthguard while participating in sporting activities, or avoiding eating foods that could crack or break a tooth.

What should I do if my tooth is knocked out?

A tooth will have the best chance of survival if you can see your dentist within one hour of the emergency. Handling the tooth by the crown, and not the root, is best so that you avoid damaging the cells that are necessary to reattach the tooth to the bone. Gently rinse the tooth in water to remove any dirt, but do not scrub it, and place it in your mouth between the cheek and the gum to keep it moist. If you can’t put it back in your mouth, keep it moist by wrapping it in a clean cloth or immerse it in milk. If the tooth is a baby tooth, there is no need to try and save the tooth, but it is still best to visit your dentist to make sure no broken pieces of the tooth remain in the mouth.

What should I do if my tooth is pushed out of position?

It is best to see your dentist right away if your tooth is knocked out of position. You may try to reposition your tooth with light finger pressure, but it is very important not to force it.

What should I do if my tooth is chipped or fractured?

A tooth that is chipped is simply a minor fracture and can usually be smoothed by your dentist. A more severe fracture may have traumatized the tooth to the point that it may be lost. Because it can be difficult to see how severe the fracture may be, it is best to contact your dentist right away to see if they are able to save the tooth. If you are able to find the broken tooth fragment, bring it with you to your dental visit.

Did you know that ..

Baby teeth, also called primary teeth, are just as important as permanent teeth. They hold space in the jaws for permanent teeth that are growing under the gums. Baby teeth start to form during the embryo phase of pregnancy. The process of shedding baby teeth and the replacement by permanent teeth is called exfoliation. This may last from age six to age twelve. By age twelve there usually are only permanent teeth remaining. Here is a teething age of baby teeth and when you should expect each tooth to erupt:

Central incisors : 6–12 months
Lateral incisors : 9–16 months
First molars : 13–19 months
Canine teeth : 16–23 months
Second molars : 22–33 months

What is periodontal probing?

A periodontal probe is an instrument used in dentistry to measure the pocket depth of the gums around your teeth. It's usually long, thin and blunted at the end. Their are indication lines that help measure in millameters.

What is the purpose, you ask?
The purpose is to ensure your gums are healthy. When the hygienist does your daily cleaning, once a year they will measure your gums. The lower the number the better. If we can diagnose that your gums need some healing, periodontal probing is the best way to do so. By measuring your gums on an annual basis we can diagnose the early stage of gum disease and to help maintain a healthy mouth.

Fun facts about Saliva ..

1. A person cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva. For example, if strong-tasting substance like salt is placed on a dry tongue, the taste buds will not be able to taste it. As soon as a drop of saliva is added and the salt is dissolved, however, a definite taste sensation results.

2. 1.7 liters of saliva is made in your mouth for one day.

3. In the saliva their are chemicals called enzymes.

4. To make saliva, we need salivary glands.

5. Human saliva is composed of 98% water, while the other 2% consists of other compounds such as electrolytes, mucus, antibacterial compounds, and various enzymes.

Are you aware of the latest technology that's being used in our office today?

Some of the latest technology in our office being used today are things such as: digital xrays which produce less radiation and can be viewed right away on the computer, no more cardboard like papers and no more waiting to be developed. In addition, the Itero (digital scan) used to take impressions without putty material and bulky trays. Our intraoral camera allows the patients to see before, during and after a procedure.
